Mobile car wash questions, answered.

General guidance for booking directly with a provider. Each business sets its own services and policies.

What is the difference between a mobile car wash and mobile detailing?

Mobile describes where the work happens: the provider comes to your agreed location. A wash usually tackles surface dirt. Detailing can add deeper interior cleaning, paint preparation or protection. The package matters more than its name: an exterior-only service does not include the cabin, and “full detail” does not automatically include every extra.

How much does a mobile car wash or detail cost?

Compare a quote for your vehicle and selected work. Size, condition and add-ons can change the price. As one local example checked October 17, 2026, Prime Mobile Detailing in Virginia lists sedan starting prices of $79 exterior, $89 interior and $149 full detail. Those are one operator’s starting rates, not a national average or a Car Wash Compass offer.

Ask for the total including travel, selected extras and any taxes before confirming. Send photos of heavy dirt or stains so the provider can explain what would change the quote.

Will a mobile car wash come to my address? What does a service radius mean?

Check the listing’s named service area and contact the provider with your exact service address. A city list is not a measured radius. Car Wash Compass shows a radius only when supplied; it represents straight-line coverage, not road distance or a promised arrival time. A coverage match does not guarantee an appointment.

An unknown radius does not mean zero coverage. We do not invent one, publish private mobile bases or turn a provider’s home into a customer drop-off point. The operator must confirm your address, access and availability.

Is travel included, or is there a call-out fee?

It depends on the operator and destination. Some include nearby travel and charge beyond a stated area; EZ Work Atlanta publishes that kind of policy. Before booking, ask whether your address has a travel charge or minimum order, and whether parking, tolls or a same-day request affect the total. Being inside a displayed service area does not mean travel is free.

Do I need to provide water and electricity?

Sometimes. Pristine says it carries its own water and power; Bat City says the customer must provide both. “Mobile” alone does not tell you which setup a provider uses. Ask before booking, especially at an apartment or workplace. If utilities are needed, confirm the connection, distance to the vehicle and permission to use them.

Can a mobile detailer work at my apartment, office or in a parking garage?

Only if the provider accepts the site and you have permission for the work. Check with the property manager before booking. Confirm access, space for open doors and equipment, vehicle height limits, water use and noise restrictions. A public parking space is not automatically suitable; Washos, for example, excludes public lots such as shopping centers.

What happens to the dirty wash water?

Ask how the provider collects or manages runoff at your location. EPA guidance explains that vehicle wash water can carry detergent, metals and hydrocarbons into storm drains and waterways. A claim such as “eco-friendly” or “biodegradable soap” does not explain where that water goes. Confirm the operator’s method and the property’s local stormwater requirements before agreeing on a wash spot.

Do I have to be home, and will the detailer need my keys?

Some providers let you leave once vehicle access is arranged; others need a handover. Interior work requires access to the cabin. Agree on a secure key exchange, whether the car may be moved and how you will be contacted. Remove valuables, and arrange a way to review the work and receive the keys afterward. Do not leave keys unattended unless you have explicitly agreed on a secure arrangement.

How long does a mobile wash or detail take?

Allow for the chosen work and vehicle condition, then get an estimate from the provider. For context, Pristine lists roughly one to two hours for an interior refresh and three to four hours for a full interior and exterior detail. These are that operator’s estimates, not a promise for another business. Ask separately about arrival windows and any drying or coating-curing time before the car can be used.

What happens if it rains or the weather is too hot or cold?

The plan depends on the job, equipment and shelter. Interior work may still be possible when exterior work needs rescheduling. Brakeout explains that rain and temperature can affect exterior detailing and coatings. Ask who makes the weather decision, when you will hear, and whether a deposit transfers. Rain after a completed wash is a separate policy; do not assume a free repeat visit.

What is included, and which services should I request separately?

Get a written list for the exact package: exterior wash, wheels, glass, vacuuming, seats, carpets and protection. Ask about shampooing, pet hair, stain treatment, paint correction and coatings individually. Operators differ: some sell these as extras, while others exclude particular jobs entirely. Tell the provider about mold, bodily fluids or pests before booking; a standard detail may not cover them.

Can I book or pay for a mobile wash through Car Wash Compass?

No. Car Wash Compass is an independent directory. Use the listing’s website or phone number to arrange service directly with the business. Confirm your address, package, total and appointment with that provider. We do not dispatch technicians, take consumer bookings or collect payment for washes. Opening hours are not a live appointment calendar, and a listing does not guarantee same-day service.

How do deposits, cancellations, payment and tips work?

Read the provider’s terms before confirming. Ask when payment is taken, which methods are accepted, and what happens to a deposit if you cancel, reschedule or cannot provide access. Deadlines and fees differ. Check whether gratuity is included before adding a tip, and keep the booking confirmation and receipt. Resolve booking or payment questions with the business you hired.

Can a mobile detailer remove pet hair, stains and odors?

Ask about your specific problem and send clear photos. Pet hair or heavy soiling may need extra labor and a separate quote; some packages include light hair only. Stain and odor work is not interchangeable with routine vacuuming. Agree on the treatment, price and realistic result before work begins, rather than assuming every mark or smell can be removed.

Can my child’s car seat be cleaned during the detail?

Ask separately; do not assume a vehicle interior package covers a child restraint. Follow the instructions for the exact seat model and agree who removes and reinstalls it. Graco’s guidance distinguishes cleaning the cover, buckle and harness, and warns against soaking harness straps or using unsuitable chemicals. A routine upholstery shampoo is not a substitute for those instructions.

What should I mention about an EV, wrap, matte paint or ceramic coating?

Tell the provider the model and finish before booking, including any repaint, film or coating. Ask them to follow the vehicle and finish manufacturers’ care instructions; products and methods should not be assumed interchangeable. For an EV, review charge-port, wiper and wash-mode instructions together. Tesla’s Model 3 manual, for example, gives specific cleaning and Car Wash Mode precautions. Do not apply those settings to a different vehicle without checking its manual.
