Use the current instructions for your exact vehicle and wash type. A setting or procedure from another EV is not a substitute for your owner’s manual.
When booking a wash for an electric vehicle, begin with its owner information. The useful question is not simply whether a business “does EVs.” Ask whether it can follow the instructions for your model, equipment and chosen wash process.
This is a preparation checklist, not a universal operating procedure. Vehicle controls, finishes and manufacturer directions differ. Check the current manual for the exact car rather than copying a sequence from a video about another model or software version.
Find the relevant instructions before arriving
Locate the sections on cleaning, automatic washes and vehicle movement. Check whether the manufacturer specifies a washing method, a dedicated mode or restrictions around particular components. If you have added a wrap, film or coating, keep its care instructions alongside the vehicle manual.
As one model-specific example, Tesla's Model 3 manual describes Car Wash Mode and a separate Enable Free Roll function for an automatic wash. It also specifies touchless-only automatic washing and warns against directing high-pressure water at the charge port while charging. These are Model 3 instructions, not universal EV rules. Read the full, applicable manual before use. Tesla Model 3 cleaning instructions.
Do not reduce that guidance to “put it in neutral.” A conveyor wash and a stationary cleaning appointment are different situations. If the process is unclear, stop before entering and ask for help consistent with the manual.
Tell the provider which car is coming
Include the year and model when requesting a quote. Mention accessories, modifications, a special finish or an existing concern that might affect the work. If the provider needs more information to assess compatibility, supply it before making the trip or paying a deposit.
For mobile work, ask the operator to confirm the planned method and setup. A claim of EV experience is useful context, but the written scope should still address your vehicle and the work you want.
If a provider's proposed process conflicts with your manufacturer's guidance, resolve the conflict before authorizing service. Do not rely on a general assurance that “we wash these all the time” in place of a specific answer.
Agree on access and vehicle movement
Clarify who will move the vehicle, if movement is needed, and who will operate any required settings. Avoid discovering at the start of the appointment that the technician expects you to leave a key or remain present when you planned otherwise.
If your car uses a phone or digital key, consult its own access instructions and agree on an appropriate handoff. Do not share account passwords to make a cleaning appointment possible. Ask the business what access it actually needs for the agreed work.
Explain any relevant locking behavior or other access detail that the technician needs to know, using the vehicle's instructions. Keep the conversation focused on the appointment rather than disabling features on someone else's generic recommendation.
Ask about materials and add-ons
Screens, seats, trim, glass, film and coatings may have their own care requirements. Ask which areas the package covers and tell the provider about materials or treatments it may not be able to identify visually.
Do not assume that a product sold as a premium extra is suitable for every surface. Request the product name and intended use when compatibility is unclear. A special finish may call for a different service or for advice from the installer before cleaning proceeds.
Our paint and ceramic-care questions help structure that discussion without prescribing a one-size-fits-all chemical routine.
Use a short booking checklist
Before confirming the wash, check these items:
- The correct manual and any finish-care instructions are available.
- The provider knows the vehicle's year, model and relevant modifications.
- The actual wash method is compatible with those instructions.
- Vehicle movement, keys and required settings have an agreed plan.
- The scope, total price and any optional products are clear.
- You know whom to contact if a concern appears during the final walkthrough.
For mobile appointments, add the normal parking, utilities and coverage checks. Electric power does not remove those practical requirements. Use the directory to find possible providers, then confirm the details directly before the visit.
