How to choose a mobile detailer: a practical comparison checklist

Look beyond a star rating by comparing the actual service, recent evidence, communication, location requirements and written quote.

The useful bit

Choose a provider that can explain the work, accept your location and confirm the price. Reviews and directory listings help you investigate; they do not replace those checks.

The best starting shortlist is not necessarily the one with the most dramatic photos. Look for businesses that serve your location and offer the work your car needs. Then compare how clearly they explain that work, the price and the appointment.

A directory listing is a discovery tool, not proof that a provider has been personally inspected or endorsed. Car Wash Compass brings together source-backed business details where available and leaves unknowns explicit. Use those details to find the official business contact, then confirm the booking directly.

Check that you are comparing the right businesses

Open each provider's official website or booking channel. Confirm the business name, service area and contact details. Look for a description of the work you want, rather than assuming that every mobile detailer offers the same packages.

If the directory and website disagree, ask the business which information is current. A changed phone number, package or coverage area may be an ordinary update; it still needs to be resolved before you pay or share private access instructions.

Keep a short list of two or three suitable options. Sending the same clear brief to each makes their replies easier to compare than requesting a vague “best price.”

Read reviews for relevant details

Use reviews to identify questions, not just to collect a score. Look for recent accounts of the service you need, how booking and arrival were handled, and how the business responded when something went wrong. A comment about a routine wash may not tell you much about a specialized treatment.

The FTC advises considering multiple review sources, checking recency and reviewer context, and avoiding the assumption that you can reliably identify fake reviews by appearance alone. Those are useful limits on how much weight to place on a star rating. FTC guidance on evaluating reviews.

If a review raises a concern relevant to your booking, ask a direct question about the current process. Do not treat an unverified allegation as an established fact about the business.

Ask for evidence that matches your job

If the provider shares before-and-after examples, ask what service was performed and whether the example is comparable to your car's condition. Photos are helpful context, but they do not guarantee the same result on a different vehicle.

For a coating, wrap or special material, ask whether the provider can follow the applicable care instructions. If your property requires insurance documents or vendor approval, raise that before booking. Do not infer particular coverage from a broad “insured” label; ask the business for the documentation needed for the actual arrangement.

A useful provider response can include a limitation. “We need to inspect that first” or “we do not offer that treatment” may be more informative than an immediate promise to fix everything.

Compare the written quote

Look for five things: the vehicle and condition described, the scope, exclusions, the total at your address, and the process for changes. If one quote is much shorter, ask for the missing details before choosing it.

A low starting price can still be a good offer, but only after you know what qualifies for it. Ask about travel, size, condition and optional extras. Our mobile price guide gives a line-by-line comparison method.

Also read payment, cancellation and weather terms. A booking request should not leave you guessing whether an appointment is confirmed or whether a charge is recurring.

Test the communication before the appointment

Notice whether the business answers your actual questions. Does it confirm the proposed address and parking setup? Can it explain the arrival window and key handoff? Does it tell you how to approve additional work?

You do not need instant replies at all hours. You do need a usable communication plan for the appointment. Ask which channel to use on the day and what to do if the technician is delayed or the location changes.

If the answers remain vague, pause the booking. Clear information is especially valuable when the service will happen at your home or workplace.

Make the final choice specific

Choose the provider whose accepted scope, location, price and schedule fit your needs. Save the confirmation and inspect the agreed areas at the handoff. Keep expectations tied to the written work rather than to a package name or a photo of another car.

Start with mobile providers, use the mobile FAQ to fill any gaps, and keep the appointment checklist handy for the day itself.
